Penimbangan Beach (Turtle nursery)

Penimbangan Beach is a local beach just outside of Lovina and close to Singaraja. The beach that is cleaned and maintained by the locals who live here and who have a small business (warung) here.

Here on the beach, a local initiative was started in 2016 for turtle conservation and for the preservation of the coral reefs. It is a non-profit organization that does this and is called Pokmaswas Penimbangan Lestari. Conservation of the turtles is part of the local community and they do so on a voluntary basis, but under the supervision of the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries. They are supported by Ganesha University (Undiksha) from Singaraja.

How does it work?

The people from the foundation find the eggs on the beach they are being stored in a sandbox, a few weeks later the turtles will come out of the egg and will find a way up, then they will move to small basin with water where they will swim around for a couple of weeks until they are released into the sea.

Finding the eggs is not something which happens through out the year mostly only in the dry season (from April to October). You are always welcome to come and visit (in the morning at 9 and in the afternoon around 2 would be the best time). A donation is always welcome but not mandatory so no commercial stuff here, when you are lucky you can participate in releasing the turtles, but there is no way to tell when this will be exactly, but when it happens it will happen around 6 pm.
