Jatiluwih rice fields
From Ubud it is almost a 2 hours drive through the countryside, small villages the way up there is already a pleasant drive.
The Jatiluwih rice terraces comprise over 600 hectares of rice fields on the flowing hillside of the Batukaru mountain range.
These are well-maintained by a traditional water management cooperatives dating back to the 9th century!
Jatiluwih is located in the central mountain range of Bali and lives up to its name, which means “really beautiful”. The village is situated at an altitude of 850 meters between centuries-old rice terraces. This region is called the granary of the island. It is the only place in the world where 3 rice harvests take place every year.

Through the authentic Subak-methode the country is being successfully watered, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Parts of the area are protected, so that agriculture is preserved.

There are various walking routes through and along the rice fields. The green terraces offer a breathtaking view. You can also rent a bicycle and cycle along the fields. Because of its location it is often cloudy and it rains often, it is best to go here as early as possible, so that the sun is still shining and it is still clear. The entrance fee is IDR 40.000 per person and you need to pay for the car, IDR 5000.

Gunung Kawi
Gunung Kawi (translated the poet’s mountain) is located north of Ubud in the village of Tampaksiring near Bangli in the area of the Pakrisan river. The temple is located in a valley surrounded by rice fields. On the parking lot there are people who want to sell you a sarong which is mandatory to wear when you enter the temple but don’t buy one (unless you want to) because when you come inside the temple you can borrow one, all they want is a small donation so you rent one for the price you want to pay.
To enter the temple you need to take 374 steps down on the way to the temple, but remember that you also have to go back up and there are a lot of steps.

The temple complex is open daily between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., the entrance fee is 50,000 Rp.

On the way to the temple you have a beautiful view of the valley and the rice fields. To get to the main area of the temple you first have to walk down a steep staircase of 371 steps, the way back up is quite tough due to the temperature, bring a bottle of water with you and it may be clear that this is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Along the stairs you will find quite a few souvenir shops, but the people are friendly and not pushy as with other temples. In addition to the sculptures carved from stone, the natural environment of rice fields is beautiful, it is a very quiet area, take your time to visit as it is worth it. You can even, in the dry season, walk into the ricefields and if you want you can even go higher but that means more steps, but the main part of the temple is also beautiful.

Taman Ayun temple
The temple is located in the village of Mengwi, west of Ubud. It is a large complex with various temples and is surrounded by a beautiful garden with ponds and canals. The highest meru has eleven floors and represents Mount Gunung Batukaru.

The temple is dedicated to the ancestors of the princes who ruled Mengwi until 1892. Pura Taman Ayun was built in 1634 and is situated in a water garden with a canal with lotus flowers on three sides. Accessible via the main gate (Kori agung) with a statue of Sai. There are various meru towers that represent the mountains, the place of the gods.

The temple has a number of cleansing ponds where the Balinese can regularly cleanse themselves spiritually, bit the same like Tirta Empul but without the tourists in the water, this is only meant for Balinese people.

It is a beautiful place to walk around and relax. Allow yourself at least an hour to explore the temple and not because the temple is so big but because it is quiet and peaceful, there are so many details. Open from 8 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon and the entrance is 30,000 rp.
