Elephant Cave also known as Goa Gajah and is located in the village of Bedulu (close to Ubud). It was built in the 9th century and served as a sanctuary, although the exact origin of the cave is uncertain, one story that it was created by the fingernail of the legendary giant Kebo Iwa. The complex contains both Hindu and Buddhist imagery, as the cave contains the some kind of altar with symbol of Shiva and the image of Ganesha, while by the river there are carved images of stupas and chattra which are related to Buddhism.

The discovery of Elephant Cave originated from reports of Dutch Indies officials, LC. Heyting in 1923 who discovered the statues of Ganesha, Trilingga and Hariti statues to the Dutch East Indies government. This is followed up by Dr. WF. Stuterhiem to conduct further research in 1925. In 1950 the Archeological Department found a place of ancient holy water with 6 statues of female.
